Both of them looked like crap compared to the Blu-ray encode though. I had to go back and force it to progressive and re-encode and compare again. Encore CS6 actually defaulted to interlaced originally. When I compared the Encore CS6 MPEG-2 DVD encode next to one from TMPGEnc trial, the TMPGEnc one looked much better. Regular DVD was another story with Encore. Although I'm a bit confused on MPEG-2 vs MPEG-4 AVC encoding for creating Blu-ray's, as it seems either option can be used.

The quality of what it defaulted to as "automatic" looked good (when compared to the original source). That was the first thing I did and it went fine. Few people other than video nerds own Blu-ray players.Įncore CS6 didn't give me any problems creating the Blu-ray. You should figure out how many people are actually willing to pay for the Blu-ray before diving in. For example, if I want to pull a x264 encode into Encore it will lock up for 10 to 20 minutes while it parses the file.

The Blu-ray software tends to be either unreliable or mysteriously slow. I find that making high quality Blu-rays is easily three times the work and time that it takes to make the equivalent quality DVD. Encore will load x264 output under the right conditions. If you want to push the quality, x264 makes amazing. Each has a so-so transcoder from mainconcept in it. I don't think it is sold anymore but it is very nice.įor Blu-rays, the main authoring games in town are Encore and DVD Architect. The cinemacraft basic transcoder will make nicer output if you need to push the quality above what the authoring apps internal transcoder does. But, I am all ears if someone has recommendations for another directions.įor DVDs, just about anything works fine for authoring. This will eliminate any need for Encore to have to invoke Adobe Media Encoder and the Mainconcept codec.

I see the most recommendations for HCenc and TMPGEnc for encoders and Encore/DVD-lab PRO for authoring, although a few people say TMPGEnc's authoring tool (which also uses their encoder) is much easier to use.Īt the moment, I'm inclined to buy TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works as a standalone transcoder and then use Encore for the authoring. From looking around, the popular options (mix of encoders and authoring tools): TMPGEnc, Sony DVD Architect/Vegas, DVD-lab PRO, Cinema Craft Encoder, ProCoder, VideoReDo, and HCenc I'm not against spending some money on better software, be it one product that does it all, or separate products for transcoding and authoring. The transcode for H.264 Blu-ray looked fine. The transcode for MPEG-2 DVD from the Mainconcept codec included seems to be pretty poor compared to some testing I did with TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works.

I've been fine with Encore for actual menu creation, and it has a pretty nice free library to worth it. I have Creative Suite CS6 so I have Premier Pro, Encore and Media Encoder already at my disposal Wondering what you guys use for transcoding and authoring your content to DVD/Blu-ray. Panasonic HD Writer does not need to do an re-encoding to output the final.

I am using Panasonic HD Writer to trim original clips and then splice together a full time with transitions between scenes and some title sequences.

As this is not meant to be a professional grade endeavor, I am not doing anything overly involved in the editing stage. I'm using a Panasonic TM90 to take video recorded AVCHD 1080/60p. The studio wants to sell DVD/Blu-ray of their recital/summer showcase events.
